TEEN COUNSELLING SERVICES

Available in-person in Calgary and online across Alberta.

Therapeutic support that promotes healthy social-emotional, behavioural, and identity development during adolescence.

Adolescents often navigate complex emotional, interpersonal, and academic demands while developing autonomy and a sense of self. When challenges arise, such as anxiety, mood difficulties, emotional regulation concerns, behavioural issues, or school-related stress, therapy provides a confidential, supportive environment to enhance self-awareness, strengthen problem-solving skills, and promote adaptive functioning. Intervention may also incorporate family involvement, as appropriate, to support communication, relational stability, and the adolescent’s overall mental health and well-being.

Reduce Anxiety and Stress

At Innova Psychology, our approach meets teens where they are with respect, compassion, and evidence-based strategies designed specifically for this stage of life.

When Teens May Benefit From Counselling

Teens often seek—or need—support when they experience:

  • Anxiety, panic, or persistent worry

  • Depressive symptoms, low mood, or loss of interest

  • School stress, perfectionism, or academic pressure

  • Social challenges, bullying, or friendship difficulties

  • Identity exploration (gender, sexuality, culture, values)

  • Emotion regulation or difficulty managing reactions

  • Family conflict or communication challenges

  • Low self-esteem or self-criticism

  • Risky behaviours or impulse-control concerns

  • Major life changes, transitions, or grief

If something feels disconnected—whether behaviours change, motivation drops, or emotions feel too big—therapy can help teens and families understand what’s underneath.

Our Approach With Teens

Teen counselling looks different from child and adult therapy. Teens want to feel respected, heard, and supported without judgment. Our clinicians use a combination of:

  • Developmentally appropriate CBT and DBT-informed strategies

  • Emotion regulation tools and coping skills

  • Insight-building conversations focused on identity, values, and personal meaning

  • Support around stress, relationships, and communication

  • Exploration of thought patterns, beliefs, and behaviours

  • A collaborative, empowering approach that gives teens agency

We tailor therapy to your teen’s personality, needs, and comfort level—whether they express themselves through talking, reflection, creativity, or structured skill-building.

OUR PSYCHOLOGISTS

Confidentiality & Parent Involvement

Teen counselling includes unique considerations around privacy and communication.

Confidentiality

  • Teens need a space where they can share openly without fear of judgment.

  • What teens discuss in therapy is confidential unless safety concerns arise.

  • We encourage open communication between teens and parents—but we respect the boundaries necessary for therapy to be effective.

Parent Involvement

Depending on your teen’s age and needs, therapy may include:

  • Occasional parent check-ins

  • Guidance on communication and relationship dynamics

  • Strategies parents can use at home to support emotional regulation and healthy coping

  • Collaborative planning for school or home-related challenges

Our goal is to support both the teen and their family system, while still honouring the teen’s growing autonomy.
